How 3D Glasses Work

Recently we invested in a 3D ready HD TV and a Mitsubishi 3d starter pack. I was so amazed with the quality of the image and fascinated with how it worked. I started doing a some researching at how the 3D glasses functioned.

This is everything that I recently found out

Since your eyes are spaced about 2 inches apart they look at things some what different from the other. I remember messing around with my viewmaster as a kid, it was so cool to look into it to see those vibrant 3d pics. The viewmaster displayed to each eye another type of image and trick the brain into thinking it was seeing just one image. I even now enjoy looking at the images, my kids clearly show absolutely no interest.

Before the recent purchase in my 3D ready HD TV and a Mitsubishi 3d starter pack, whenever I though of 3D TV I contemplated those flimsy glasses with one red and the other blue lens. These glasses were used on older 3D flicks. The way it worked was the TV would display different 2 images, one in red and the other in blue.

That’s the reason why if you looked at your tv screen without the glasses you would see a blurred or fuzzy image. When watching a 3d picture with the glasses, the red lens would filter out the red image, and the blue image can be filtered out through the blue lens. So the eye looking through the red lens would see the blue image and similarly the eye with the blue viewing only the red image. Yet again deceiving your head into thinking it’s seeing one image.

These modern 3d glasses are referred to as shutter glasses.To learn how such glasses give good results first let’s talk about what happens with the TV’s 3d image. A 3D ready TV can be flipped from 2D TV to 3D TV. When experiencing in 3D way the TV gives you two different images changing images at 120 times per second. With that in mind now slip on the glasses.

The shutter glasses are performing the same principle . Here is the best way I could show you this. Imagine blinking a single eye then the other as well as keep alternating the blinking so extremely fast that your alternating blinking each eye 60 times per second for a total of 120 blinks per second for both eyes.

That’s what the shutter glasses do but they do it so quickly you actually can’t tell a single thing is happening. The glasses are synchronized using the 2 alternating images on the TV screen and therefore the final result is exceptional picture quality.

Wearing 3D glasses allows you to sense that your part of the action

Watching 3D TV you’re feeling like flying images are jumping out at you and that frightening individual is reaching out to get hold of you. I have been watching ordinary TV just about all my life it’s wonderful to see it taken to the next degree.

The TV itself has the technology to view in 3D but will need some additional things help it along, like an emitter and shutter glasses. In this article I will explain what the 3D starter pack is and what is inside of it.

Why Do You Need A Starter Pack

It would be nice to watch movies and games in 3D. The technology has come such a long way since the red and yellow flimsy glasses that had to be worn in the past. It is so much more realistic looking. It is also very exciting to play video games like Grand Turismo 5 in 3D.

3D TVs have the technology built into them but still need a few things. What you need to complete your viewing experience is a source to play the 3D disc. For this you need a 3D Blu-ray player or a PL3. This does not come in the starter pack but must be purchased seperately. In addition to the source you’ll need shutter glasses, and to make the glasses work with the TV you need a emitter. It sounds very confusing but it really isn’t and well worth it.

What’s In The Kit?

The starter kit includes 2 pairs of 3D shutter glasses, the emitter, a HDMI cable, and remote.  The only additional thing you will need is a 3D ready TV and a source like BluRay 3D player or PL3.  Otherwise, everything you need is in the box to start watching movies or sports in 3D.  Your family is going to love this.

The more complicated they are, the more confused I get, and it doesn’t take much to confuse me. The instructions are so simple most people have it set up in 10 minutes. This is watching TV in a whole new way, it’s not that old fashion layered look.

The Emitter

The emitter is a little box that helps the TV work with the shutter glasses. The TV screen and the glasses are actually blinking so fast you can’t tell. So you need someting to make them blink in sync, that’s where the emitter comes in.

The 3D Shutter Glasses

ever wonder why you see blurred or double vision without 3D glasses….that’s because your looking at two different images at the same time.

The Mitsubishi 3D shutter glasses are easy to wear. It’s important that the glasses feel comfortable on you since you will be wearing them for a couple of hours. I don’t want to wear something that is distracting and annoying. The 3D  glasses can fit over your eyeglasses so no need to worry about not being able to see the TV.

When you think of 3d TV you think of those flimsy glasses with one red and one yellows lens. I always though, where was the 3d effect?   Sometimes I might detect a layered type 3d effect, but overall thought this was a waste of time. If you saw the glasses required for todays 3d TV you would be surprised at how sophicated they are.

If you want to watch TV in 3d today you first need a TV that you can view 3d movies with. Some models are Mitsubishi 3d TV or Samsung 3d TV to name a few. Then you need a 3d emitter box, glasses, cable movie. Luckily kits have been put together so everything you need other than the TV it self comes in one box.

Picture pops out at you

These kits can cost several hundred dollars but is totally worth the money. It is truly 3d tv. The quality  looks awesome and the effects are astounding. The picture pops out at you and the 3d perception is unmistakable.

Most kits come with glasses, some only have one pair and others have two. I would opt for the 2 pair set since they are not cheap. Additional glasses can be purchased separate and in different sizes. Easy to hook up

Many of these systems are pretty easy to hook up. I know when you get your 3d kit, you don’t want to spend much time figuring out how to connect everything up. You want to plug it in and start watching the images jump out at you. Check customer reviews online to see which ones are the easiest to install.

Some can be hooked up in ten minutes.After you have it all set, the last thing you want to do is have to make all kinds of adjustments to get the picture right. At this point I would start the tried and true method of slapping the box. Usually works but in this case I think I would break it.

Play games in 3d

A feature that is available on some models is a magic button called a mode button. You just press until the picture is perfect. No slapping , no getting frustrated, just press and play.If you like playing games you love playing them in 3d,  it is quite amazing. I never was into the games myself but being able to play in 3d now, I am a fan. So of the drawback for the 3d tv is the movies are limited but more and more are coming out. Also the glasses can seem a bit heavy after extended viewing, 1 hour or more.

Conclusion

If you want to watch movies and games in 3d then you will love this product. But remember, you have to have a TV that is 3d ready. Check with the TV mfg. to make sure the 3d emitter kit is compatible with your TV.
